A Brief History
of Gendo-Kai

Gendo-Kai Karate was created in 1972 by Sensei Derek Falcus Lorrison (1939-1994). Sensei Lorrison held Dan grades in Wado-Ryu Karate and Shotokan Karate as well as having trained in jiu-jitsu and judo. Sensei Lorrison trained under some of the foremost instructors of the time, including Tatsuo Suzuki.

The Karate Club at the University of Hull was formed by Sensei Lorrison in 1968 originally training in Wado-Ryu prior to the creation of Gendo-Kai Karate. Gendo-Kai is a hard, uncompromising style of karate; literally the hard way of karate. Throughout the 1970s, the University of Hull’s Gendo-Kai Karate Club had great success in British University Championships, including a hat-trick of victories from 1977-1979. The style extended beyond Hull; however, today is only taught at the University of Hull.

In 1984, Sensei Lorrison along with the University of Hull produced an instructional video of the syllabus of Gendo-Kai Karate, which remains the bedrock of the system that continues to be taught today.

Following Sensei Derek Lorrison’s untimely death in 1994, Sensei Ian Campion took over as the Chief Instructor of Gendo-Kai Karate until his retirement in 2013. Sensei John Frankland has continued Sensei Derek Lorrison’s legacy as the Chief Instructor of Gendo-Kai Karate since 2013.

The Gendo-Kai Karate Club at the University of Hull continues to train in the spirit that Sensei Derek Lorrison intended; train hard, fight easy.
